What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is a regulated healthcare profession in the UK, governed by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) under the Chiropractors Act 1994. It is a legal requirement for anyone practising as a chiropractor in the UK to be registered with the GCC.

The profession focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system — primarily the spine, joints, muscles and surrounding soft tissues. Chiropractors are trained to assess the whole body, considering how movement, posture, lifestyle and activity all contribute to a patient’s symptoms.

All chiropractors at Duston Chiropractic Clinic hold a Masters degree in Chiropractic (M.Chiro), which requires a minimum of four years full-time postgraduate study at an accredited institution, plus ongoing continuing professional development (CPD) as a requirement of GCC registration.

No Referral Needed

Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners, which means you can book directly without a referral from your GP. If your chiropractor identifies a need for further investigation or onward referral during your assessment, they will advise you on the appropriate next steps.

You do not need to have seen a doctor first. Most patients self-refer directly.

Your First Visit to Duston Chiropractic Clinic

Every new patient appointment at Duston Chiropractic Clinic follows a structured path designed to give your chiropractor a clear and thorough picture of your complaint before any treatment decisions are made. Initial appointments typically last 45–60 minutes.

Case History

A detailed discussion of your current complaint, medical history, lifestyle, activity levels and any previous treatment you have had.

Physical Examination

Assessment of your posture, range of movement, joint function, neurological function and muscle tone. Orthopaedic and neurological tests may be carried out depending on your presentation.

Diagnosis & Explanation

Your chiropractor will explain their findings, what is contributing to your symptoms, and what they recommend. Imaging or referral discussed if needed.

First Treatment

Where clinically appropriate, treatment begins in your first session. Your chiropractor will explain which techniques they are using and why.

Chiropractic Techniques We Use

Our chiropractors draw on a broad range of evidence-informed techniques. No two treatment plans are the same, your chiropractor selects the approaches most appropriate for your individual presentation, preferences and goals.

Chiropractic Adjustment (Spinal Manipulation)

A precise, controlled movement applied to a specific joint to restore its normal range of motion and reduce pain. This is the technique chiropractic is best known for. You may hear a clicking sound during an adjustment, this is caused by a change in pressure within the joint fluid, not bones cracking. Most patients find adjustments comfortable.

Joint Mobilisation

Slower, rhythmic movements applied to a joint to gradually restore range of motion. Often used alongside or as an alternative to manipulation, depending on your presentation and individual preference. A gentler approach suitable for a wide range of patients.

Soft Tissue Therapy

Hands-on techniques applied directly to muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia to reduce tension, improve circulation and address areas of restriction contributing to your symptoms.

Active Release Technique (ART)

A movement-based soft tissue method used to address problems within muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Particularly useful for sports-related soft tissue complaints and repetitive strain injuries. Nick Wilderspin has completed specialist ART training.

Medical Acupuncture & Dry Needling

Fine, sterile needles are placed into specific muscles and trigger points to reduce tension and support musculoskeletal recovery. Used as part of a broader treatment plan rather than in isolation. Link to dry needling page.

Sports Taping

Kinesiology or rigid taping applied to joints and muscles to provide support, offload painful structures, and assist recovery during return to sport or physical activity. Xiao-Wei Low has completed specialist kinesiotaping training.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM)

Specialist tools are used to identify and treat areas of restriction or scarring within soft tissue. The technique can help to break down adhesions and improve movement in areas that are difficult to address by hand alone.

Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT)

A low-force chiropractic method that focuses on the relationship between the sacrum (base of the spine) and the occiput (base of the skull), using positioning and gravity to support spinal and pelvic function. A gentle alternative for patients who prefer a less forceful approach.

Rehabilitation & Exercise

Structured, progressive exercise programmes designed to strengthen supporting muscles, improve stability and reduce the risk of recurrence. We aim to leave you with the knowledge and tools to manage your condition independently. One-to-one rehabilitation sessions are available.

Postural & Ergonomic Advice

Practical, specific guidance on workstation setup, sleep positions, movement habits and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to your complaint. Given as part of every treatment plan, not as an afterthought.

Annual Continuing Professional Development

GCC registration requires all chiropractors to complete CPD each year to maintain and develop their clinical skills. This is a mandatory requirement of registration, not optional. Our team regularly undertakes specialist training beyond what registration requires, including postgraduate courses in rehabilitation, soft tissue techniques and sports injury management.

The Duston difference

There are many chiropractors in Northamptonshire. Here’s why patients choose, and stay with, Duston Chiropractic.

Fully Registered Practitioners

All chiropractors are registered with the GCC, a legal requirement to practise in the UK. Members of the team are also registered with the RCC and BCA. You can verify any chiropractor’s registration at gcc-uk.org.

Treatment Starts on Day One

Where clinically appropriate, your first chiropractic treatment takes place at your initial consultation. You do not need to attend a separate assessment appointment before receiving care.

Evidence-Informed Care

Treatment decisions are based on clinical evidence and thorough individual assessment, not a one-size-fits-all approach. Nick’s McGill Method training and ongoing CPD keep our clinical practice current.

Two Convenient Locations

Our Duston clinic is at Duston Sports Centre on Cotswold Avenue. Our Kislingbury clinic is at The Dovecote on High Street, serving patients from across Northamptonshire.

Self-Management Focus

Our goal is to leave you equipped to manage your condition independently. Every treatment plan includes advice, exercises and practical guidance tailored to your lifestyle and activity levels.

Clear, Transparent Pricing

No hidden costs, no packages you didn’t ask for, no pressure. We tell you what we expect your care to involve after the initial assessment, and you decide what to do next.

Common Questions About Chiropractic Care in Northampton

Do I need a GP referral to see a chiropractor?
No. Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners, which means you can refer yourself directly without seeing your GP first. You can book online or by calling 01604 754 456. If your chiropractor identifies a need for further investigation or onward referral during your consultation, they will advise you accordingly.
How many chiropractic sessions will I need?
This depends on the nature of your complaint, how long you have had it, and your personal goals. After your initial assessment, your chiropractor will give you a clear indication of the expected number of sessions. Acute complaints often show meaningful improvement within 4–6 sessions. Long-standing or chronic conditions may require a longer course of care. Some patients also choose to continue with periodic maintenance appointments once their symptoms have resolved.
What is a chiropractic adjustment and does it hurt?
A chiropractic adjustment, also called spinal manipulation, is a precise, controlled movement applied to a specific joint to restore its normal range of motion. You may hear a clicking or popping sound during the adjustment; this is caused by a change in pressure within the joint fluid, not bones cracking. Most patients do not find adjustments painful. Some experience mild, temporary soreness afterwards, similar to the feeling after exercise. Your chiropractor will always explain what to expect before carrying out any technique.
What is the difference between a chiropractor and a physiotherapist?
Both professions treat musculoskeletal conditions but have different training frameworks and regulatory requirements. Chiropractors complete a minimum four-year Masters-level qualification and must register with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), a statutory regulator established by Act of Parliament. Chiropractic has a particular focus on the diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions and their relationship with the nervous system. Physiotherapy is a broader rehabilitation-focused profession regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). In practice there is significant overlap, and the most appropriate choice depends on the specific complaint and personal preference.
Is chiropractic care safe?
Chiropractic care has a good safety record when provided by a GCC-registered practitioner. All chiropractors at Duston Chiropractic Clinic are registered with the GCC, which requires practitioners to maintain professional standards and complete annual CPD. Before treatment begins, your chiropractor carries out a thorough assessment and discusses any risks relevant to your individual situation. Where manipulation is not appropriate, alternative techniques are always available.
Can I see a chiropractor during pregnancy?
Yes. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is generally considered safe and may help with pregnancy-related musculoskeletal discomfort, including lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain and sciatic symptoms. The team at Duston Chiropractic Clinic has experience treating patients at all stages of pregnancy and adapts techniques to suit your stage of pregnancy and individual comfort. Internal link: /pre-post-pregnancy-chiropractic-care/
Are your chiropractors fully qualified and registered?
Yes. All practising chiropractors at Duston Chiropractic Clinic hold a Masters degree in Chiropractic (M.Chiro) and are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). It is a legal requirement in the UK to be GCC-registered to practise as a chiropractor or use the title. Members of the team are also registered with the Royal College of Chiropractors (RCC) and the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). You can verify any chiropractor’s registration at any time via the GCC’s public register at gcc-uk.org.
What should I wear to my chiropractic appointment?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal. Depending on the area being assessed and treated, you may be asked to remove an outer layer. Your chiropractor will explain what is required at the start of your appointment. There is no need to bring anything specific to your first visit — just arrive a few minutes early to complete a brief patient form if you haven’t already done so online.

I can not express how much Fia has improved my life. No exaggeration. I have been suffering with a shoulder issue for years and nothing I have done has come close to fixing it. I was advised, by another happy patient, to see Fia as she has worked wonders for her. Fia was lovely and put me at ease right from the start and through her skills, she has got my shoulder feeling better than it has in years. As well as great treatment I also find Fia a joy to chat to and discuss the world, which also eases any tension. I totally recommend Fia to anyone looking for help.

I had been suffering with debilitating back pain since April, which was affecting my everyday life, including my sleep. I managed to get a booking easily and quickly with Joseph. On the initial appointment he thoroughly went through my history and symptoms and then diagnosed my problem. Through effective realignment, massage and tailored exercises I have seen a huge improvement in just three visits. I’m no longer waking up in pain and I am back to living life without the constant pain. Thanks Joseph!!

I suffer from various back related issues due to a fairly sedentary job and poor posture. I was already being treated by Joseph for my upper back and neck and then one day I suffered a lower back spasm after sitting at my desk for 12 hours. I went in being barely able to walk and came out feeling like a new man. Joseph is extremely knowledgable and professional in his approach, and his ability to manipulate a man significantly heavier than himself is also commendable. I will try to follow Joseph's recommendations for addressing my poor posture, but no doubt I will be back again in the future. I cannot recommend Joseph highly enough.

I suffered from a bad back where I struggled to stand up and thought it would self heal with a bit of rest. So I went to see Joseph at duston chiropractic where he did a magnificent job and diagnosed the problem and got me going in a couple of sessions where I was almost back to normal. Thank you Joseph.

This is the first time I have used a chiropractor and I am so pleased my google search landed on Joseph. I have now had three sessions and each one has produced great results and I am recovering so quickly. The impressive thing is is that I appear to be resolving more than just my lower back issue. The session is a great mix of assessment, manipulation, massage stretch, exercises and recommendation. Joseph has a great, calm manner and I will definitely return again.
